“Hi, can you help us get more clients?”
This question is probably the most typical inquisition we get from mission-minded organizations.
And, while it’s true, at the end of the day they want more customers so they can have a bigger impact (and pay the bills), getting more customers isn’t what they really need. It’s likely not what you really need either.
As we do discovery with these prospects, we often find that they actually have an alignment issue. Their messaging is out of alignment with their mission, and their marketing is out of alignment with their messaging.
If we were to get them more traffic or leads—if we were to get their core offer, brand, website, content, etc. in front of more people—they would simply miss out on more opportunities instead of gaining more customers. They’re not ready to turn on the faucet of more traffic yet.
They often come to us with no strategic plan whatsoever. They’re throwing things at the wall and seeing if anything sticks. They’re feverishly making YouTube videos one month. Then going all-in on TikTok the next month. Long-form blogging the next month. And all the while, usually very little is sticking. Part of it is a consistency problem, but the bigger problem is a lack of a plan.
